Pantura road which we now know as the Dutch De Grote Postweg or Post Road from Anyer to Panarukan was built in the era of Herman Willem Daendels between the years 1808-1811. This road shorten travel time by road from Surabaya to Batavia previously taken a month could be shortened to one week, and also very useful for sending a letter by Daendels to facilitate communication between controlled areas along Java.
To build the project, Daendels has employed thousands of people by force and not obtain wages or known as peonage. Many workers died and Daendels hang their heads on trees either side of the road. Governor General Daendels was scary, he cruel, sadistic and merciless. The road was completed in just one year (1809). Very briefly, a great achievement, and that’s why Daendels Road is known worldwide.
